Sometimes

from Loose Ends by Dave Stagner

about

Sometimes I forget to eat, sometimes I forget to breathe, sometimes I forget where I am. All true. Really.

This song is more or less a true story, the sort of philosophical musings I have when I'm alone and walking. The dog in the song is Rubucac, who was still kind of a puppy when this song was written. He died of cancer a few years ago, at age 10. I miss him terribly.

I recorded this a long time ago, lost the original software, and just have an mp3 to work from. I was a lot more careless with my recording performances then, so there are glitches in my playing I'd never tolerate now. Nonetheless, I'm very proud of the song itself, and it's sort of a time capsule of what I once sounded like, back in 2004 or so.

The drones in the background were guitar feedback recorded into a Deltalab Echotron digital delay for looping, a technique I used heavily in that era for improvisational music.

lyrics

Stripe of orange paint 'round the old elm tree
at the corner, the last one on the block
My dog sniffs the trunk like he always does
Lifts his leg and says "I was here too"
And the sign on the curb says
"No parking monday 8 to 4
Tree work, order of the city"
In the dappled shade that won't be here tomorrow
Lost in thought, til my dog tugs on the leash

Sometimes I forget to eat
Sometimes I forget to breathe
Sometimes I forget where I am

We walk on to the falls, and down the steps
The creek is swollen from the rain
The sun is out, the air is cool
A rainbow hovers in the mist
For a thousand years this creek has cut this rock
In a million more it'll all be gone
My dog is waiting, I say his name
He looks at me and we walk away

Sometimes I forget to eat
Sometimes I forget to breathe
Sometimes I forget where I am
