In 2016, I developed a condition called respiratory papillomatosis that would strongly shape my life and my music. Basically, I have warts growing on my vocal cords. It really hampers the voice, making it difficult to speak or sing. I was diagnosed in early August, and had surgery scheduled for initial treatment in September. I was so anxious about my condition that I started having nightmares.

One morning, I had a powerful nightmare about being a wolf who was shunned from the pack because he couldn't howl. I woke up and wrote this song. The guitar and vocal recordings were done the next day, so this was the state of my voice then.

Layers accumulated. The first was the piano, which I played on Justin's ancient piano, which has not been tuned in decades, has survived floods, and is roughly 1/2 step flat, depending on the key. Then I added Dennis and Justin. Finally, I added Nikki's backing vocal on a whim, while she was over to help record something else.
