about

This song won the 2018 Ohio Valley Filk Festival songwriting competition. The theme was "psychedelic", and while I was uncertain about being able to write good psychedelic lyrics, I was more confident in writing a psychedelic guitar part. The dynamic, emotional, wild nature of the guitar composition led me to the lyrics, which turned out to be very good after all.

lyrics

Frightened by the eerie glow of
Lightning through the clouds
The freezing rain that tastes like death
And wraps you like a shroud
Rain hisses, thunder rumbles
The colors fade away
There’s no more white and no more black
There’s nothing left but grey

Your fear is not unjustified
You’re not just paranoid
There’s nothing you can run from
In the formless, shapeless void
A gust of wind surprises you
And you find you’re spinning ‘round
You try to catch your balance
But no longer see the ground

A sudden stroke of lightning
Gives just a second’s glow
And then you catch a fleeting glimpse
Of treetops far below
You make yourself stop struggling
As you take a ragged breath
If you free yourself from this stormy grasp
You’ll plummet to your death

Your sense of self is waning
Your world is losing form
In terror and in hopelessness
Surrender to the storm
The icy howling wind sings
The lightning dances ‘round
Sublime transcendent chaos
Then you remember the ground

Your tears of joy are falling with the rain
Your frightened screams are lost in the wind
And you’re falling are you dreaming and you’re falling are you dreaming

You wake up to the sunshine
Smiling warm upon your face
The ground is strong and solid
And there’s color everyplace

The storm is dissipated
You’re safe and warm and whole
You’re a self back in the world again
You’re a body and a soul

But this world is merely beautiful
This world is merely safe
The memory of chaos
Makes tears stream down your face
